About training in Spain

How pilot training is regulated

Spanish pilot licences are issued by AESA under the EU aircrew regulation (Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011, Part-FCL), whose common rules are set at EU level by EASA. Training for licences such as the helicopter licence is given at an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) or a Declared Training Organisation (DTO); the theoretical test is organised by AESA and the practical test is a flight test with a flight examiner. Spain also has national licences for categories such as microlights (ULM), which are separate from Part-FCL. Students should confirm a school's ATO or DTO status with AESA.

Training pathways

  • Helicopter pilot (FCL(H))

AESA's helicopter procedure sheet sets a minimum age and a course at an ATO or DTO, followed by an AESA theory test and a practical flight test.

  • Airline transport pilot (ATPL)

AESA lists the prerequisites for the ATPL, including a valid Part-FCL CPL, ATPL theory, a Class 1 medical and the FCL.510 experience requirements.

International students

Non-EU nationals should check Spain's immigration and study-visa rules with the competent Spanish authorities and with the school; this directory does not promise any visa outcome. No flight-training-specific immigration page was retrieved for this review.

Training approval does not establish immigration permission or international-student eligibility. Verify current rules with the official sources above.

Foreign licences and conversion

AESA's guide describes the conversion of FAA licences under the EU-US BASA agreement: conversion of any FAA licence (PPL, CPL or ATPL) only yields a Part-FCL PPL(A), with rating transfers (SEP, MEP, night, IR) if experience requirements are met.
