What Training Prices Include

A checklist of costs that are often inside, outside or hidden in flight training prices, from exams and medicals to accommodation and visas.

Last reviewed 16 October 2026

A training price is only meaningful when you know what it covers. The same headline number can include nearly everything or only the aircraft. This guide lists the components most worth checking. It does not state typical prices, because they vary by country, aircraft, school and person, and we do not estimate them without a source.

Costs usually tied to the school

  • Aircraft time. See Wet vs Dry Aircraft Rental Rates.
  • Instructor time. Flight instruction, and also ground briefing and debriefing, which some schools bill separately.
  • Simulator or training device time, where used.
  • Ground school. Classroom, online or blended; see Online Ground School.
  • Enrolment, registration or membership fees.
  • Books, charts, headsets, flight bag, tablet or software if not provided.
  • Uniform, in some professional courses.

Costs usually paid to third parties or authorities

  • Medical examination. Fees are set by the examiner and vary.
  • Theory examination fees, which may be charged by an authority, an exam provider or the school.
  • Practical test or examiner fees.
  • Licence or rating application and issue fees, charged by the authority.
  • Language proficiency assessment, where required for radio licences or ratings.
  • Radio licence or other administrative permits.
  • Verification and conversion fees, if you are importing a licence from another state; see Investigating Licence Conversion.

Costs that depend on your situation

  • Visa and immigration. If you are not a citizen, you may need a student visa or permit. For example, the UK and Canada publish their student visa and study permit rules, and Canada keeps a list of designated learning institutions; see the UK and Canada pages. Not every flight school qualifies for every visa route.
  • Security screening. In the United States, non-citizens may have to complete a security threat assessment before certain flight training. See the United States page.
  • Accommodation and living costs, which can be a large share of a full-time course.
  • Travel, insurance and local transport.
  • Repeats. Extra lessons, repeated tests or repeated exams if you do not meet the standard first time.

Things sometimes buried in terms

  • Fuel surcharges or price adjustment clauses.
  • Cancellation charges for missed lessons.
  • Charges for inactivity or expiry of prepaid balances.
  • Landing, parking and airfield charges.
  • Charges for aircraft damage, insurance excess, or "hull deductible" for students.
  • Currency conversion clauses.
  • Tax added at invoice rather than quoted.

The hours assumption

Prices are usually built on a number of flight hours that may match the regulatory minimum. Authorities set the minimum, and individuals often need more. Always ask for the rate beyond the planned hours; see Regulatory Minimum vs Actual Completion Hours.

What a price does not buy

A price covers services, not outcomes. It does not guarantee that you will complete the course, pass a test, receive a licence, convert a licence to another country, qualify for work in a country, or be hired. Be wary of language that implies otherwise. If a promise is important to you, it should be in the written agreement.

Questions to ask

  • Can you send an itemised written quote with a date and currency?
  • What is excluded? Please list every extra I should budget for.
  • What is the hourly rate beyond the quoted hours?
  • Is the price fixed, or can it change during the course?
  • What happens to unused funds?
