About training in France

How pilot training is regulated

French pilot licences follow the EU aircrew rules (Part-FCL), which EASA sets and the DGAC applies as the national competent authority. DGAC licence offices within the regional DSAC directorates process licence files, mostly through the Portail PN online portal, and the DSAC also handles ATO and DTO training organisations and examiners. Initial professional licences (CPL, ATPL) and the instrument rating are handled centrally in Paris, while private licences go through regional offices. The directory could not retrieve DGAC pages stating specific age and hour minimums, so those are not listed here.

Listing here does not imply affiliation. Flight School Atlas is independent of every aviation authority.

Training pathways

  • Licence application through the DSAC licence offices

Pilots are asked to use the Portail PN online procedures for licence requests; the central Paris office handles initial CPL and ATPL and the IR, regional offices handle private licences.

Qualification terminology

Names and privileges are local to France. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

CodeOfficial nameMinimum ageRegulatory minimum flight timeSource
PPLLicence de pilote privé (Part-FCL)Private pilot licence under EU Part-FCL, issued in France by the DGAC. EASA guidance for the aeroplane licence cites about 45 hours of flight instruction; DGAC pages retrieved for this review state no figures.n/p45 hEASA general guidance for the PPL(A): around 45 hours of flight instruction. CPL/ATPLLicences de pilote professionnel et de ligne (Part-FCL)Initial CPL and ATPL licences and the IR qualification are handled by the central DSAC licence office in Paris.n/pn/pofficial

A regulatory minimum is a legal floor for the qualification. It is not the number of hours most students need, and not a guarantee of cost or completion time.

Terms you will meet

DSAC
Direction de la sécurité de l'Aviation civile: DGAC's regional safety directorates, which host the licence offices.
ATO / DTO
Approved and declared training organisations; the DSAC handles both in the regions.

The DGAC online portal for personnel navigant (aircrew) procedures.

Medical, language and instruction

Aeronautical medical certificates are required under EU Part-MED; no DGAC page stating the classes was retrieved for this review. Official medical information

Languages of instruction among researched schools: French, English.

International students

Non-EEA nationals should check French visa and residence requirements with the French authorities and the school; no flight-training-specific official page was retrieved and nothing here promises eligibility.

Training approval does not establish immigration permission or international-student eligibility. Verify current rules with the official sources above.

Foreign licences and conversion

The DGAC page on foreign aeronautical titles explains that only licences issued by third states are subject to validation, that EEA licences benefit from mutual recognition, and lists forms for validation, ICAO conversion to a Part-FCL licence and EU-US BASA conversion. One passage on private validation cites an old date and should be checked with the DSAC.
